My area of study is religious humour. Some of the links above are to cartoons which some people may find offensive. For instance, the 'Jesus and Mo' cartoon and the Mohammed Image Archive depict the prophet Mohammed. I intend no offense in linking to these sites.

I can see this thought really struck a chord with people....
My only experience of Umberto Eco is of some of his fictional works.
'The Name of the Rose' (a marvelous medieval monastic murder mystery) was made into an excellent late 80s movie with Sean Connery and a very young Christian Slater. A central theme of the movie is the debate over the role of humour in religion.
Then there is 'Foucault's Pendulum' which explores the self-replicating nature of conspiracy theories and should be made into a movie (it is a much more interesting exploration of age-old secret societies than 'The da Vinci Code').
