Echos of Eco

'The comic ... seems bounded by time, society, cultural anthropology'
Umberto Eco, Travells in Hyperreality.

I can see this thought really struck a chord with people....

My only experience of Umberto Eco is of some of his fictional works.

'The Name of the Rose' (a marvelous medieval monastic murder mystery) was made into an excellent late 80s movie with Sean Connery and a very young Christian Slater. A central theme of the movie is the debate over the role of humour in religion.

Then there is 'Foucault's Pendulum' which explores the self-replicating nature of conspiracy theories and should be made into a movie (it is a much more interesting exploration of age-old secret societies than 'The da Vinci Code').

Oops - sorry if I have digressed too far from the blog topic.
